Green Abbey Project

As you know, Christ the King Parish has been entrusted to the care of the Chemin Neuf Community. One of our houses in the UK is called Sclerder Abbey, a former Carmelite convent located in Cornwall, where we offer retreats and the Cana mission for families.

A new development at Sclerder is the Green Abbey, a permaculture project to grow vegetables, orchards, and crops with sustainability in mind. This project is in response to Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical, Laudate Si’, On Care for our Common Home. This is a call for the whole Church to take seriously the environmental crisis and find both big and small ways to care better for the earth (we are blessed to have the Our Common Home Project here at Christ the King Parish). Over the last seven years, Chemin Neuf has also been looking for ways to answer this call.

Beginning in October, Sclerder will be inviting people to come and spend time at the abbey to help with the project in an atmosphere of prayer and community. The project rests on four pillars:

  • Work

  • Community life

  • Prayer

  • Formation in permaculture theory and practice

This is your invitation – a working holiday in beautiful Cornwall. While the hope is for people to come for a minimum of two weeks, a one week stay will be considered. Please go to the Chemin Neuf UK website for details.

We pray that God will make fruitful this small seed.

Nancy Wood, ccn
